Agricultural worker

Hourly rate: $16.50

Number of hours per week: 37.5 hours

Numbers of weeks for summer employment: 8 to 14 weeks

The main tasks will be:

• biological weed control;
• prepare and apply foliar and root compost tea;
• preparation and fertilization of soil with plastic mulch for plantations and planting of fruit trees;
• pruning of fruit trees, vines and northern kiwis
• The other tasks will be fruit picking and beekeeping.

All work in organic farming will be supervised by Robert Poirier. 

The mentors will be Frédéric Poirier (Biological Production professor at Collège Alfred). Robert Poirier (retired engineer)irrigation, compost tea, soil preparation with plastic mulch

We follow WSIB agricultural safety rules, all safety equipment (PPE) is provided. Before each type of work, there is a team review to identify the dangers associated with the tasks so that they can be carried out safely. Meeting and reviewed every morning.

For agriculture students, they will gain experience in all aspects of growing organic fruits and vegetables as well as the prerequisites for food safety.

The farm has an area of 58 acres of which 16 are under cultivation. We use organic and

permaculture methods for the production of fruits and vegetables. The farm is open for U-pick.

The variety of fruit we currently have on the farm is:

• Asparagus
• Haskap (9 varieties)
• Raspberry (black, purple, yellow, blue and red)
• Blackberry
• Gooseberry and currant (8 varieties), justaberry and aronia
• Table grape (5 varieties)
• Kiwi (2 varieties)
• Fruit tree (apple, pear, plum, sea buckthorn)

In addition, we have two greenhouses and an area of one and a half acre which is used for the cultivation of vegetables by ‘’Fermes des Paniers Copieux’’ (Diégo Occhicone et Rami Sader).
